‘ Just do something ’ is my new mantra.
Not ‘Sign up today for our 3 month gym membership and find your six-pack.’
Not ‘Get your bikini-body fast with our 4 week, low-fat, low-carb diet.’
It seems to me that we expect too much of ourselves. Not surprising when we are constantly bombarded by perfection or unrealistic ideals by the media.
Of course we would love that celebrity-style bikini body or that perfectly toned six-pack but how many of us actually go more than four times after signing up for that over-priced gym membership? How many can actually keep to a restrictive diet for more than a week?
We aim high and then feel bad when we fall short of our goals. It’s not a recipe for success or self-belief.
So, how about adopting the ‘just do something’ approach instead?
Take exercise for example…
Regular exercise is one of the most important things you can do for your health…mental as well as physical. Lack of exercise combined with poor diet is second only to smoking as a risk factor for early death.
The government recommendations are for us to do 75 minutes of strenuous exercise (or 150 minutes of moderate exercise) every week.
A punishing 3 x week gym routine is all very well if you have the time or willpower to actually do it. But for most of us, that is entirely unrealistic…and quite daunting. So daunting, in fact, that many of us report to doing no exercise and physical activity at all.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
If that crazy gym routine is just not for you…and the government recommendations just have you heading for the sofa, don’t despair. Just do something. Anything. Because just a bit of activity has got to be better for you than nothing. Find something that works for you.
Just use the stairs not the escalator and your health will improve. Take a walk at lunchtime once a week. Wash your own car rather than using the carwash. Above all, aim low! Forget the nonsense about reaching for the stars…and start by reaching for the garden rake….because a little bit of activity will do your body good, and improve your mood and self-confidence. Then perhaps, you can do a little bit more.
Just do something…and then see what happens.
